The Smith Chart can be seen as either a Z chart or a Y chart. The Z chart view is useful for adding series impedance elements while the Y chart view is useful for adding shunt admittance elements. In this video I go over the math behind the Y chart.
In this video I show how shunt RF circuit elements can be added using the Y chart and how to go back-and-forth between the Y chart and the Z chart. I also show how inductors and capacitors can be synthesized using open- or short-ended transmission line stubs.
In this video I work through two different examples to illustrate how you can go back and forth between the Z chart and the Y chart to find the input impedance of an RF circuit containing any combination of shunt and series circuit elements.
